What Separates MRG Foundation From the Rest

Since the original gathering in 1976, MRG Foundation has continued the tradition of placing grantmaking decisions in the hands of a committee of activists. The Grantmaking Committee comprised of individuals directly involved in developing genuine solutions to the difficult issues facing their communities and the state works with MRG Foundation staff to assess proposals, conduct field interviews and make final funding decisions.

This is a radical departure from traditional philanthropy: in most mainstream Foundations, donors make the decisions. Activist control of funding ensures that resources are targeted where they're needed most, and increases the skills of those serving in this role.

To advance our social change mission, MRG Foundation works to ensure that the Grantmaking Committee reflects the diversity of the movement by issue area, geography, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age, class and varying physical and mental abilities.

As an integral part of our commitment to a democratic grantmaking process, MRG Foundation connects applicants and grantmakers in a constructive dialogue about projects and social change efforts evolving statewide. MRG Foundation is only one of a handful of foundations nationwide that invites finalists to make a presentation and respond to questions from the entire Grantmaking Committee.

MRG Foundation further demystifies the fundraising process by working with prospective grantees to teach grant writing and budget development skills before and throughout the grant writing process.

MRG Foundation funds grassroots organizations working in the areas of human and civil rights, racial justice, environmental protection, economic justice, peace, and international solidarity. MRG Foundation's recent funding has supported organizing efforts addressing issues such as: globalization, domestic violence, homelessness, community-labor relations, HIV/AIDS, reproductive rights, queer liberation, immigrant rights, ancient forest and watershed protection, progressive media, rights for the differently abled, anti-militarism, and struggles for sovereignty and self-determination.

When you become involved with MRG Foundation as a donor, a grant recipient, or as a volunteer, you join a vibrant community working to challenge the systems that create social, economic and environmental injustice in Oregon.
