Two hundred people joined us Sunday, July 25, for "Peace & Pie in the Park" in Eugene. People from places as far away as Medford, Hermiston and Portland came together to eat pie, play in the sun, and make connections with other people from different parts of Oregon's social justice movement. Eighteen MRG Foundation grantees tabled at the event, sharing information about their work on racial justice, economic justice, forest protection and more. And as a bonus, we raised $4,000 for social justice work in Oregon!
Marjory Hamann talked to the crowd about how special this event was for her and for many of us -- it's great to celebrate social justice work in the community where MRG was founded. This was also the first celebration in Eugene since our co-founder Leslie Brockelbank passed away in August, 2009. Since the original gathering that Leslie and Charles Gray initiated, MRG has made grants of over $11 million, including over half a million dollars this last year to support social change work across Oregon. ¡Leslie Brockelbank presente!
Thanks to all of our wonderful piemakers and food donors (listed below), our event sponsor Sustainable Wealth Management, and thanks to all of you who came out in spite of temperatures in the 90s.
In addition to the photos we have on Flickr (the slideshow above) we've also got more up on our Facebook page.
We'll let you know when we've set the date for next year's party!
